FAQs Answered About the Best Manual Jack Plate
Share
In this post, I’m answering the most frequently asked questions I get from boaters. If you’re looking for a reliable, easy-to-use manual jack plate for shallow draft setups, you’re in the right place.
Why is the On The Fly Jack Plate different from other manual jack plates?
The On The Fly Jack Plate is the only tool-free manual jack plate on the market. Unlike traditional manual plates that require wrenches or extra tools, ours lets you adjust your motor height with a simple turn of the built-in handle. That means you can make quick adjustments while you’re on the water — without paying the higher cost of a hydraulic system. It’s an affordable solution that still gives you the convenience of on-the-water adjustability.
Why Choose a Manual Jack Plate Over Hydraulic?
Many boaters prefer On The Fly’s manual jack plate system because it offers:
- Dependable performance with no electronics or pumps
- Affordable pricing compared to hydraulic jack plates
- Lightweight design for small boats and shallow draft vessels
- Quick, on-the-fly adjustment without stopping the boat or taking it out of the water
This is the best jack plate for when you want simplicity and reliability.
Will a jack plate increase my boat speed?
In most cases, yes. By optimizing your engine height, jack plates can reduce drag and add a few extra MPH.
Will an On The Fly Manual Jack Plate Fit My Boat?
Chances are, yes. We offer two models:
- Standard Manual Jack Plate – can support motors up to 30hp (without factory trim and tilt or gas shock assist) and 150 lbs.
Another determining factor is your motor mounting width - Measure your engine's motor mounting bracket at its widest points. If the width exceeds 10 3/4 inches, you will need one of our Large Units.
- Large Manual Jack Plate – can support motors up to 50hp and 230 lbs.
If your outboard motor falls within our weight and size specs (which cover most small to mid-sized outboards), installation is fast and easy — usually under an hour with basic tools. Under each specific product, you will find size specifications. You can always reach out if you're unsure which one fits your set-up.

How Much Vertical Adjustment Do You Get?
Manual - On The Fly Jack Plates can give you 5 ½ inches of vertical lift, and depending on your mounting location, you can get up to 7 ¾ inches. That range is perfect for adjusting to changing water depths, shifting weight loads, or tuning your boat for max performance.
This flexibility is a game-changer when you're navigating skinny water, crossing sandbars, or running stump-filled backwaters.
Can You Adjust It While Running?
Yes, and that’s what makes this plate so unique. You can make adjustments while underway using the handle – no need to stop, get wet, or take the boat out of the water. Just remember to always follow safe boating practices and keep your eyes forward.
Raise it when you're gliding through the shallows, and drop it down when you need better grip or trim in deeper water.
Are On The Fly Jack Plates Durable?
Absolutely. I build every plate using marine-grade aluminum and stainless steel hardware that stands up to the abuse of saltwater, mud, stumps, and tough backcountry use. These plates are built to last season after season, and I include simple maintenance tips so you can keep yours performing like new.
